Bio
Silverbolt was sparked, along with his brothers, at the behest of Optimus Prime, when the Autobots were in need of both a combiner team and air forces to attempt to gain some ground against the mostly flight-capable Decepticons. But that's not the beginning of his story.
Many (many many many) years prior, a drone cargo plane (not the fancy drones with sparks, like Scorpy or Soundwave's cassettes, but one of very small and basic programming) malfunctioned on a routine flight and crashed so very terribly that its owners abandoned its wrecked chassis where it fell. Other broken and wrecked planes joined it eventually (not that it noticed, being without spark or even a modicum of AI), and during the war these husks were repaired and given life by the Allspark to form the Aerialbots.
Silverbolt found it quite an honor to be an Aerialbot - ironic, considering his subsequent discovery of a near-crippling fear of heights or, more precisely, of crashing fatally again. The source of this was, Silverbolt learned, that he carried some memory of whatever life he'd "lived" before becoming an Aerialbot, though the entirety of said memory was of the terrible last moments of said existence. Rather ashamed of having such a weakness, he never explained it - and thankfully his brothers seemed to accept him as he was - and Optimus Prime assigned Silverbolt to be the leader of the new team in order to give him something to focus on, to get past his fear.
The Aerialbot commander proved himself to be a calm and capable leader, thankfully, and since then he has largely dedicated himself to keeping his unit safe and his brothers as happy as possible despite the war they had all been born into. This devotion has, unfortunately, also resulted in a noted lack of socialization with mechs outside of the Aerialbots, leaving Silverbolt as slightly awkward and a little shy. He seems to lack the normal flier lack of shame and sense of flamboyance as well, and is unlikely to ever bring up the flier versus ground-bound mech controversy due to some faint envy of the latter despite belonging to the former.
Coming to earth with Slingshot in early October, 2007, he quickly found himself rather confused and alienated by nearly all his brothers pairing off, away from the unit. Opting to let them be happy as they chose and not intrude, he kept himself apart from them and fell into something of a depression as he was faced with his brothers effectively "growing up" and needing him not nearly as much as they had during the war.
Things came to something of a head when Slingshot, the brother Silverbolt had felt he was still marginally close to, announced his resignation from active duty with no warning. He finally decided, after some discussion and spark-searching, to take more of an active part in his brothers' lives, and has since been making more of an effort to reach out to them and stay part of their lives.
Silverbolt has also shown himself to be amazingly inept at personal relationships even outside of his unit. Fighting off the perception that Decepticons were faceless, if only to soothe his own conscience somewhat, he's found the Motormaster to be someone he sees something of himself in, if things had gone differently, as well as someone who seems to understand him in a way no other has before (as well as apparently being attracted to him, which confuses the Aerialbot to no end). The fact that every conversation he has with Motormaster tends to end up in major injuries, yelling, or, in one instance, holo!sex has yet to make him realize that he probably doesn't need this slag.
Holo
Silverbolt has one!
More specifically, Silverbolt chose an unassuming male holo purely because his mun had dearly wanted to use Chris Lowell for something and one icon in particular fit well for what she wanted for Silverbolt.
